One of the largest non-university research institutions in the area of functioning and rehabilitation research worldwide, Swiss Paraplegic Research (SPF) incorporates various disciplines including medicine, biology, nursing sciences, human movement sciences, physiotherapy, psychology, sociology, communication sciences, economics, law and political sciences, epidemiology and statistics. SPF is dedicated to contributing to sustainable and long-term improvement of health and quality of life of persons with spinal cord injury and promotes a comprehensive and community-oriented research approach that fosters the interaction between practice and research.
The Swiss Confederation has recognized SPF as "research establishment of national importance" since 2008. SPF also works in strong collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine and the Center for Rehabilitation in Global Health Systems, both at the University of Lucerne.
